Virtualised Storage is a method for presenting different types of physical storage i.e. SCSI, Fibre Channel, SAS etc into a commonly available pool of storage which VMware can then use to create VM Storage.

VMware software runs virtual operating systems (Linux, Windows and Solaris x86) on common hardware based platforms that are normally highly available. VMware then provides a completely virtualized set of hardware to the guest operating system. VMware software virtualizes all of the physical hardware including video adapters, network adapter and storage controllers. Each hosted VM provides pass through drivers for all common hardware components. This method of virtualizing systems allows better utilization of available resources, reduces footprint and power/cooling requirements by reducing physical server count. Each VMware virtual machine becomes a virtual copy of the physical hardware albeit with shared resources with other VM's. In practice, a system administrator can pause operations on a VM (virtual machine), move or copy that VM to another physical computer, and there resume execution exactly at the point of suspension. Alternately, for enterprise servers, a feature called VMotion allows the migration of operational VM's between similar but separate hardware hosts sharing the same storage. Each of these transitions is completely transparent to any users on the virtual machine at the time it is being migrated.
